How To Use ChatGPT
May 09, 2023I’ve been to a lot of business and marketing events recently and they have all been talking about ChatGPT. It’s a hot topic at the moment and it is even making mainstream news.
Here’s a quick blog on how to use ChatGPT and what to use it for.
What Is ChatGPT
ChatGPT is a predicative language program using an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot. It allows you to have human-like conversations and much more to get the results you want.
It is far from perfect. ChatGPT is not permanently connected to the internet, so results are not based on real time, but it is updated very regularly. It is a tool to use and assist you in your day to day work and not to fear.
How To Access ChatGPT
Sign up for a free account on any browser. You don’t need an app of anything like that. There is currently a free version which is open to the public because ChatGPT is currently in the research and feedback-collection phase.
There is also a paid version, ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month which gives you a faster response speed, priority access to new functionality and other features.
Follow these steps for a quick start guide to get going with ChatGPT:
1. Head to chat.openai.com and sign up for an account:
https://chat.openai.com
2. You will be asked to set up a password and for some other basic details like date of brith
3. You will be brought to a screen like this which is the main interface for ChatGPT.
- You can start a new chat from the send a message bar in the bottom centre.
- You'll also see nine boxes explaining how to use it.
- From the top left hand side in the black column, you can start a new chat and view previous chats.
- From the bottom left hand side in the black column, you can upgrade to plus and access your account.
How To Use ChatGPT
ChatGPT is always learning from the message terms you enter. Every time you use it you are training the algorithm.
The more content you feed it and the more you refine your messages, the better it will be. You could even try feeding it information about your business, social media posts or email newsletter content.
Here is how results display after you have sent a message:
The idea is to chat and not just to throw a question out and get an answer. So if you don’t get something you like at first, just keep chatting or modifying things. For example type in phrases like:
- Give me some more suggestions on...
- Rewrite in a casual tone / conversational tone / with a positive spin / simplifying the jargon...
- Make the results more concise / in bullet point format / table format / list format
Use specific and detailed questions. The more specific and detailed your questions are, the more accurate and relevant ChatGPT's answers will be. This will help you get the information you need to get the results you want.
What To Use ChatGPT for?
From a marketing perspective Chat GPT could be used as a tool for raising the bar of your marketing efforts. However, don’t use it as a stand-alone tool.
Not sure what to use ChatGPT for? Try out some of these to start a message thread:
- Focus on your target audience: ChatGPT can help you understand your target audience better by answering questions about their demographics, interests, and behaviours. Use this information to create more targeted marketing campaigns.
- Use ChatGPT to generate content ideas: ChatGPT can help you generate ideas for blog posts, social media posts, and email newsletters that will appeal to your target audience.
- Stay up to date with industry trends: ChatGPT can provide you with information on the latest trends and best practices in your industry. Use this information to stay ahead of the curve and improve your marketing strategy.
- Use ChatGPT to optimise your website: ChatGPT can provide you with insights into how to optimise your website for search engines and improve your user experience. Ask for suggestions for alt tags for images, most popular search terms, generate SEO friendly titles, computer code you have forgotten how to do.
- Get feedback on your marketing materials: ChatGPT can help you get feedback on your marketing materials, such as ad copy, email newsletters, and landing pages. Use this feedback to improve your messaging and design.
- Use ChatGPT to research your competitors: ChatGPT can help you research your competitors and identify their strengths and weaknesses. Use this information to create a more effective marketing strategy.
- Use ChatGPT to improve your customer service: ChatGPT can help you provide better customer service by answering common questions and providing support to your customers.
- Use ChatGPT to create personalised marketing messages: ChatGPT can help you create personalized marketing messages that speak directly to your target audience's needs and interests.
- Use ChatGPT to track your marketing metrics: ChatGPT can help you track your marketing metrics, such as website traffic, conversion rates, and social media engagement. Use this information to adjust your marketing strategy as needed.
- Use ChatGPT for brainstorming and a source of inspiration: Product descriptions, new brand names, workshop titles, the list is endless. Get it to suggest ideas for both your work and personal life. Book recommendations by listing your favourite authors.
Conclusion
My view is the ChatGPT is just another tool to improve how you approach your work, raises capability and gives businesses (particularly small businesses and entrepreneurs) access to tools and information they would not otherwise have access to.
It should most definitely not be used in isolation. Use it as an assistant on the side.
Avoid copying and pasting the results. People are looking for authenticity and what ChatGPT does not have is experience, opinion, personality or originality. That needs to come from you and is where competitive advantage lies.
Always fact check the results, use your common sense and be aware of your and its biases.
Like any form of AI, the challenge is how we can use it responsibly for good. Does this signify the end of marketing jobs as we know it? We’ll have to wait and see.
