Mastering Call To Action Buttons
May 24, 2023When it comes to website design, having a clear Call To Action (CTA) button is crucial for guiding visitors and achieving your desired goals. You can't just cross your fingers and hope people will do what you want them to do. You need to tell them.
Examples Of Call To Actions (CTAs)
On a website, Call To Actions (CTAs) are often a clickable box with an instruction. You can try out these examples on your own website:
- Sign Up Now - Encourages visitors to create an account or join a newsletter.
- Buy Now - Directs users to make a purchase on an e-commerce website.
- Learn More - Invites visitors to gather more information about a product, service, or topic.
- Get Started - Prompts users to begin a process or experience, such as signing up for a free trial.
- Request a Quote - Encourages potential customers to inquire about pricing or services.
- Download Now - Offers visitors the opportunity to download a resource, such as an e-book or whitepaper.
- Book Appointment - Prompts users to schedule an appointment or consultation.
- Join the Community - Invites visitors to become part of an online community or social network.
- Add to Cart - Prompts users to add a product to their shopping cart for purchase.
- Subscribe Now - Encourages visitors to subscribe to a blog, podcast, or video channel for regular updates.
Remember, the effectiveness of these CTAs can vary depending on the context, target audience, and specific goals of your website. It's important to test and iterate to find the most compelling CTAs for your unique situation.
7 Ways To Create Effective CTAs:
CTAs serve as signposts that direct visitors towards the actions you want them to take, such as signing up, purchasing, or learning more. A well-designed CTA increases user engagement, improves conversion rates, and enhances the overall user experience.
Here are 7 ways to make your CTA buttons stand out, enhance user engagement and boost conversions:
- White Space Matters. To enhance visibility and clarity, provide ample white space around your CTA buttons and make sure they are not close up to other elements like text and images. This helps users easily identify and focus on the desired action and click on the CTA.
- Keep them short and succinct. Five words max. Your CTA should be concise, compelling, and easily understandable. Use action-oriented words that create a sense of urgency and motivate users to act promptly.
- Design and Colour. Use strong, memorable and consistent colours for buttons across your website. Make your CTA buttons visually appealing and distinct from other elements on the page. Use colors that align with your brand and evoke a sense of urgency or action. Have good colour contrast between the button and surrounding elements to draw attention to the CTA and comply with web accessibility standards.
- Optimal Placement. Include a CTA above the fold on certain key pages like home pages, landing pages and product pages. This ensures they are immediately visible to visitors. Every page on your website should have a CTA, it doesn’t always have to appear first thing.
- Don't limit yourself to just one CTA per page. Place them strategically throughout your website to cater to users at different stages of their journey. Don’t have too many CTAs per page so visitors have fewer decisions to make
- Mobile Responsiveness. Ensure that your CTAs are optimized for different screen sizes: desktop, mobile and tablet. Test the responsiveness of your buttons across devices to guarantee a seamless user experience.
- Test and Analyze. Continuously test different variations of your CTAs to identify the most effective design, placement, and wording. A/B testing can provide valuable insights into user behavior and help optimize your CTAs for maximum conversions.
CTAs in Action
I recently designed a new website for www.ekeyewearopticians.com and it is a great example of Call To Actions in use. Have a browse of their website for some inspiration. They also sell great glasses if you are based in Northern Ireland.
A big thanks to ZCM Digital and Gillian Robb Photography for collaborating on this project. Give them a shout if you are looking for a web developer or brand photographer and I can help with the design, copy and graphics. Get in touch.
Driving User Engagement And Conversions
Clear call to action buttons play a pivotal role in driving user engagement and conversions on your website.
