Embracing Imperfection: Why Authenticity Matters More Than Perfection

In today’s fast-paced, image-driven world, the pressure to be perfect can feel overwhelming.

Whether it’s crafting the ideal social media post or launching a new project, many of us fall into the trap of waiting for everything to be flawless before acting. But here’s the thing: perfection isn’t just overrated—it’s often a barrier to progress.

This idea hit home for me recently. During a social media masterclass I was delivering, many attendees admitted they were afraid to post anything unless it was “perfect.”

Then, in a conversation with actress Suranne Jones, pictured above (known for her roles in Gentleman Jack, Vigil and Doctor Foster), she highlighted how society’s obsession with perfection, especially online, creates unnecessary pressure.

And if that wasn’t enough, the same theme popped up again when I met with a university about launching a new course. They were hesitant to move forward until every detail was ironed out.

These moments made me realise how perfectionism infiltrates so much of what we do. But here’s the reality: waiting for perfection can paralyse you. If I had waited for every project or social media post to be flawless, I wouldn’t have made any progress in my own career. My rule of thumb? If something is 80% there, just get it out there! The details you’re obsessing over are often invisible to others and the sooner you act, the sooner you can learn and improve.

In a world where curated images and polished presentations dominate, what truly stands out is authenticity. People connect with what's real, not what's perfect. So, the next time you’re tempted to hold back because something isn’t “just right,” remember that your imperfect, genuine efforts are what will resonate most with others.

Perfection doesn’t build growth—action does. You can always fine-tune as you go, but you can’t grow if you never start.

Stop chasing perfection and start embracing the power of being real.
